Bushfire HAY

Feeding stock that has survived the fires of hell might not be sexy, but is vital to the farmers who continue to struggle during the current bushfire emergency. Using Lisa and Geoff Portman’s well-honed bush-telegraph, every cent raised buys hay, and delivers it to farms within the bushfire zones.

99 bales of hay in a day!
Lisa Portman: “Given all the help we received after the 2009 fires here in Kinglake, Geoff and I would like to collect up some hay to send to Gippsland. We have a local farmer willing to give a discount price so our aim is to get 100 round bales. If anyone would like to help out with some money please let me know.😘”

Lisa Portman reports:
"Sometimes the planets just align. At 10pm on Wednesday evening Geoff and I had an idea. By 11am Friday morning, two trucks with 99 bales of hay rounds rolled into Buchan.
Massive thanks to the two truck drivers, Clint and Bob who not only set out at 4am, but have kept us informed along the way.
We got this lovely message back today, which brought tears to our eyes:
'You'd be happy to know that the 2 truck loads you guys donated yesterday went further in behind the lines to where it was needed the most.
Where we unloaded all the bails the farmers are mostly likely going to be cut off from any help, and trapped in when the weather changes today, for the whole weekend at least.
They were so grateful to receive the 2 loads you could tell by the look in their eyes without them having to say a word.
We made sure they knew where it came from and that you guys know exactly what they are going through.'
With the donations already received we have easily covered the first 99 bales and are anticipating that we will be able to get another load done.
Thanks to everyone who helped spread the word, and feel free to keep doing so - we have plenty more sources of hay, or other supplies that can be sent."

"To bring everyone up to date with our hay donations. We have purchased a further 100 round bales (two semi trailer loads) that will hopefully go to Swifts Creek, providing the road is open, this weekend.
The need for feed will be ongoing for months and distribution is being handled by local stock agents.
Promised donations should allow us to work on a third consignment of 100 round bales, so thank you everyone for your generosity that has far exceeded our initial expectations."

" Remember the convoy photo going into Buchan under police escort about two weeks ago?
Early in our fire hay fundraising we had consigned 99 round bales on two trucks, and we didn't know the driver of "the green truck" behind the police lead vehicle.
Today we met the driver of "the green truck". Adam Lockett is his name, a log harvest contractor from Heyfield. Adam was unable to work in the forest today due to fire danger, and continues to clock up hay runs as an alternative. We loaded a further consignment of 36 round bales early this morning from the Exton property in Kinglake - that hay will be in Buchan by now.
A second load of 28 bales was loaded yesterday and will arrive Buchan today with "DJ" and Rebel. 🐾
A 3rd load 34 bales is being loaded, also headed for Buchan with Don.
That is a total of 98 bales today and tomorrow.
This weekend we hope to access Geoff Biggs' hay on the alluvial Yarra flats and consign 120 bales on 3 trucks. Destination: Swifts Creek.
Next week we have 50 bales going to Corryong thanks to Bells Civil Engineering of Yarra Glen.

Don Cameron loaded 40 bales in Kinglake this morning, destined for Buchan.
All the truck owner / drivers who have assisted us, (and so many others), are volunteering both their time and trucks, not even accepting fuel money.
They are an inspiration.
Getting permits to get access into Swifts Creeks from DELWP is proving difficult, but Geoff Portman isn't one to give in easily. It WILL happen!

Message from our Truck Driver Don Cameron:
"Hay is all delivered. I have to say everyone has been really helpful, from Geoff and Brett with arranging the hay and transport; Misia at the DELWP with sorting the permit; Sarah and Neil from NHVR (Vicroads) who escorted me in from Bairnsdale to Buchan; Katie who directed me to the Farm, and a very grateful Andrew the farmer for the help. A job well done by all."

Lisa Portman reports:
"Another day, another Hay Run - this time with the assistance of Bell Civil Engineering based in Yarra Glen.
On advice from the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF), this load went to John & Jenny Star from Cudgewa (near Corryong).
They were extremely grateful. Their farm is 1650 acres. Only 50 acres are unburnt.
They are currently feeding out 10 round bales a day to their stock. They desperately need more, this load will only last a few days."

"A whopping load to finish the weekend.
The best value-for-donated-money yet.
Geoff & Pat Biggs of Toolangi generously offered these paddocks for hay soon after we initially put out the call for donations a couple of weeks back. All we had to do was get it cut & baled! The paddock’s on the Yarra Flats, adjacent to the Healesville Sewerage Plant are clearly 'nutrient enriched,’ producing these whopping five feet bales.
Geoff Biggs assisted Steve Dickinson, (cutter & baler), Ben Schmolling, (owner of the borrowed tractor, to produce over 130 bales for less than $3,000.
Three Kenworths provided from ANC Forestry, & Sherritt Transport, (both Morwell based), started loading the bales at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Four hours later they were on the road to Swifts Creek, with a VicRoads escort from Bairnsdale onwards, along the fire-impacted Omeo Highway. They arrived in Swifts Creek late Sunday morning.
Peter ‘Pilso’ Richards was delighted as he now has hay to distribute amongst the old Omeo Shire farms.
100% of the money donated is delivered as hay on the ground, That was, and remains, our promise to our generous friends."

Lisa Portman said, "We could not have imagined so many folk would get on board with our hay run, but the truck drivers have been absolutely incredible. This was DJ's second load."
